What makes a good password?

Aimed at:  Edinburgh Napier’s staff & students

When setting your password the Password Manager will ensure it meets the University's password criteria, but there are ways that you can make it even more secure:

Do:

  • Use a password with mixed-case alphabetic characters (a-z, A-Z).
  • Use a password with non-alphabetic characters.
  • Use a mix of numbers, letters and non-alphanumeric characters.
  • Use a seemingly random selection of letters, numbers and non-alphanumeric characters.
  • Use a password that is easy to remember, so you don't have to write it down.
  • Use a password that you can type quickly, without having to look at the keyboard.

Don’t:

  • Use your username in any form.
  • Use your first, middle or last name in any form, or your initials or nicknames.
  • Use your spouse's, child's or pet's name.
  • Use other information easily obtained about you.
  • Use a word contained in any dictionary, in any language, spelling lists, or any other list of words or abbreviations.
    Use dates.
  • Use keyboard sequences, e.g. QWERTY.
  • Use a sample password, no matter how good, that you have obtained from a book or web site that discusses information and computer security.
  • Write a password down or store it online, on your computer or anywhere others can access it.
  • Share your password with anyone
