My student has asked for time off to attend an event such as a family wedding, what should I tell them?

It is their choice as an adult learner whether they attend class or not however this excerpt from the student charter emphasises their responsibility:

Your responsibility:​ We can expect you to have a professional attitude, attend all timetabled classes, prepare for and participate fully in class and ask for advice if you are having difficulties with your academic studies.
