My PDT student would like to change course, what do they do?
Aimed at: Personal Development Tutors
In the first instance, support the student to explore why they want to change course/programme. Can they relate to the following reasons...
- Do they need help with academic skills or their wellbeing?
- Are they unclear about their career options?
- Do they have concerns about IT or financial issues?
- Is their living situation causing problems for them?
A student can get support for all these difficulties and other issues they may be experiencing – see the hyperlinks above, My Napier and the websites listed below for more support information.
If after considering their motivations, they are sure their current programme is not for them, do they know which programme they’d would like to change to? Refer them to the Edinburgh Napier Prospectus. They can also make an appointment to speak with one of our Career Development Consultants to consider their interests, future career goals and which programme may suit them better.
Once decided, the student must ask the Programme Leader (PL) of the desired programme if they would be willing to accept them.
If the PL is agreeable, the student would then ask their current PL to approve the change. If both PLs are supportive, the School administrator will advise on the correct paperwork.
- Student will need to demonstrate necessary pre-requisites for the new degree.
- Programme change within trimester is unlikely after week 3
- Student may need to withdraw from studies and apply for the next intake of the new programme – refer to Withdrawal of studies FAQ. If approved, student must inform their funding body and Edinburgh Napier’s Fees Team to discuss any fee implications of changing programme.
- For international students, all changes must be reported to Visa & International Support.
- Current EU students will remain eligible for home fee status for the duration of their intended programme of study provided they commenced the programme prior to 1st August 2021. Should any student change programme after this date, their fee status may change depending on individual circumstances.
